In Danish, nouns (the words for things) and modifiers (adjectives) have a few rules that are different from English. Don’t worry, with a few simple tricks, you’ll be able to describe people, objects, and places clearly.
In this lesson, we’ll cover:
- Noun gender
- Indefinite vs definite forms
- Plurals
- Possessives
- Adjectives and agreement
1️⃣ Noun Gender
In Danish, every noun has a gender:
- Common (en) → Most nouns, like en bog (a book)
- Neuter (et) → Fewer nouns, like et hus (a house)
Tip: You usually need to memorize the article en/et with the noun.
Examples:
en stol → a chair
et bord → a table
Quick trick: Start sentences with en/et + noun until it becomes natural.
2️⃣ Indefinite vs Definite
Indefinite = “a” or “an” in English
Definite = “the”
In Danish, the definite article goes at the end of the noun:
Indefinite: en bog → a book
Definite: bogen → the book
More examples:
et hus → a house
huset → the house
Some nouns get a double definite when you add adjectives:
En stor bog → a big book
Den store bog → the big book
3️⃣ Plurals
Making nouns plural is simple but can be tricky:
- Most nouns add -er or -e:
en bog → bøger (books)
en stol → stole (chairs)
- Neuter nouns often add -e:
et hus → huse (houses)
- Add the definite plural ending -ne:
bøger → bøgerne (the books)
huse → husene (the houses)
4️⃣ Possessives
To show ownership, add -s like in English:
Johns bog → John’s book
Frejas stol → Freja’s chair
Tip: There’s no apostrophe in Danish! Just add -s directly.
5️⃣ Adjectives & Agreement
Adjectives describe nouns: big, small, red, happy…
- Adjectives agree with gender and number:
en stor bog → a big book
et stort hus → a big house
store bøger → big books
- Adjectives go before the noun like in English.
Tip: Don’t stress the endings too much at first, the pattern will become natural with practice.
✅ Quick Recap
- Nouns have gender: en (common) or et (neuter)
- Definite articles go after the noun: bogen, huset
- Plurals often add -er/-e, definite plural adds -ne
- Possessives use -s, no apostrophe
- Adjectives agree with gender and number
🎯 Practice Time
Translate these into Danish:
- A big book
- The house
- Freja’s chair
- The big books
Answers:
- en stor bog
- huset

👍 Tip from Freja
When learning nouns and adjectives: always learn them together with their articles. This will save you a lot of mistakes later.
